Plastic-Free Automatic

Why we love it

It answers the question most people bring to this page: can a machine brew my coffee without hot water running through plastic? Every other automatic here says no somewhere. Simply Good Coffee lists the whole wetted path — a 304 stainless showerhead, basket and internal plumbing, a stainless boiler with a borosilicate glass tube, and a borosilicate reservoir and carafe — and the only polymer left is medical-grade silicone in the seals and drip stop. It brews at 195–205°F, the range drip coffee needs, with one button and an optional bloom. You pay $115 more than the Moccamaster for it, and what that buys is the brew path.

Pros

  • Stainless steel and borosilicate glass everywhere the water goes, per the manufacturer's parts list
  • Brews at 195–205°F across a full 8-cup pot
  • One button, plus an optional bloom for a pour-over-style pre-soak
  • Glass reservoir, so you can see how much water is in it and whether it's clean
  • Removable parts are dishwasher-safe

Cons

  • Glass carafe on a hotplate — pour within twenty minutes or the coffee keeps cooking
  • Silicone seals are still a polymer, if your line is none at all
  • Amazon lists a 2-year warranty and the manufacturer's site says 5 — check which applies before you buy
  • Premium price at around $480
